Shifters Clocks
Metal art clocks created by Nick Shiflet.

These clocks were made in the past two years. They originated 5-6 years ago when I started making clocks from found objects. The first clocks I made were from a clock motor my dad gave me which I put through a circular saw blade. After that came some made from VW engine parts. From there I went to sharp dangerous looking industrial chunks of steel. The challenge came to finding good looking pieces of steel. That wore off. I started to cut out shapes from aluminum by hand. Soon I was introduced to computer aided cutting technology. Now designing the clocks is the greatest part. To disappear into some supposedly non-existent space to wander in. The other fascination is to see the finished physical product of metal that was conceived inside me.

I have been creating art more or less for the past 15 years. I can't see myself ever not working at some art or another. At times my inspiration comes from within, others without. Sometimes it comes from an effort to create the 'thing' that some art does to me. It's also a direct form of therapy. I also create art for the simple fact that I'm bored and need to occupy my self. The act of making art creates sensations that can't be found anywhere else.

I also work in other mediums. I paint with oils in very bright colors, lots of play at transition between light, dark, hues, curves , and shapes. I do photography, mostly black and white. For quite a while I was doing pinhole photography with a couple of cameras I made. After that I've usually shot with b/w infrared film. Creating Super- 8 films and audio for them is another area I've worked in the past couple years.
